This is an original 1936 color print of two women working for the Department of Agriculture. They are painting models of produce to depict the grade of farming products permissible in the marketplace. The caption writes, "The segmentation of the oranges under treatment by the lady on the left enables the painter to reproduce every marking on the original in exactly the same position on the facsimile. The result is that government inspection and grading, necessarily a subjective operation at best, is controlled as carefully as possible by stubborn wax and unarguable color.
